Markup is not margin
- Markup is your profit as a percentage of your cost. Margin is the same profit as a percentage of your price. They always give a different number for the same job.
- Example: a job that costs $100, marked up 25%, sells for $125. The $25 profit is 25% of the $100 cost (markup), but only 20% of the $125 price (margin).
- Pricing a job off a margin target instead of a markup target (or the other way around) is one of the most common ways contractors underprice a job without noticing.
- My Company.io tracks your real cost and margin on every quote line, from your own price library — see how it works.
