Sales tax calculator.
Add sales tax to a subtotal in one click. There’s no single US rate — it’s set by state, and usually by county and city too — so use your own rate below, and see how to find it further down.
Find your rate
- Sales tax is set state by state, and most states let counties and cities add their own rate on top — there is no single national rate to calculate from.
- 5 states charge no statewide sales tax at all: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (Alaska still allows local sales tax in parts of the state).
- Whether a contractor’s labor itself is taxable, separately from materials, also depends on the state — check your state’s rule before you quote a job.
- For the exact, official rate at your job site: your state’s Department of Revenue — directory of every state tax agency at taxadmin.org (Federation of Tax Administrators). For context only, not your rate: the nationwide average combined state and local rate is about 7.5% (Tax Foundation, 2026).
